SMALL GROUP GUIDE

  • Weekly Vision Casting:  In America, we are well versed in the principles of democracy including a leadership structure based on the will of the people. But God’s leadership structure for the Church is based on His will, not ours. Understanding this will have a great effect on the way we approach and respond to the leadership structure that God sets up for His Church.

  • SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS

WARM UP: What are some differing ways (good and bad) you’ve seen people respond to church leadership? What was the ultimate effect on the leaders, on the individuals, or on the church as a whole?

HEAD: These questions help us examine the Word.
    1. Read Hebrews 13:17.
    2. What are the reasons given for the command to “obey your leaders and submit to them”?
    3. Who is this command ultimately designed to profit?

HEART: These questions help us wrestle with what we believe.
    4. What was your initial, instinctive response to the command of Hebrews 13:17? When (or why) is it hard for you to submit to church leaders?
    5. Paul repeatedly describes Jesus as one who “gave Himself” for the sake of others (Galatians 1:4, 2:20, Ephesians 5:2, 25, 1 Timothy 2:6, Titus 2:14). If we want to be like Jesus, how might this impact our response to our leaders?
    6. What are some of the safeguards God has set up to avoid the problems that come from fallible leaders? Do these satisfy your misgivings about leaders? Why or why not?
    7. In what ways do you believe that obeying and submitting is profitable to a congregation?

HAND: These questions help us bring truth and beliefs into our everyday life.
    8. What are one or two responses from you that might bring joy to the leaders of Trinity? Can you commit to offering these responses? When? How? How might this be profitable for you as well?
