Sermon Notes
“60 Therefore, when many of His disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept it?” 61 Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were grumbling about this, asked them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you were to observe the Son of Man ascending to where He was before? 63 The Spirit is the one who gives life. The flesh doesn’t help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are some among you who don’t believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning those who did not believe and the one who would betray Him.) 65 He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless it is granted to him by the Father.” 66 From that moment many of His disciples turned back and no longer accompanied Him. 67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” 68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.” 70 Jesus replied to them, “Didn’t I choose you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil.” 71 He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot’s son, one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray Him.” (John 6:60-71, CSB)
THE GOSPEL IS TRUTH, BUT NOT NECESSARILY WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR! (60-61)
“60 Therefore, when many of His disciples heard this, they said, “This teaching is hard. Who can accept it?” 61 Jesus, knowing in Himself that His disciples were grumbling about this, asked them, “Does this offend you?”
“6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For rarely will someone die for a just person—though for a good person perhaps someone might even dare to die. 8 But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 How much more then, since we have now been justified by His blood, will we be saved through Him from wrath.” (Romans 5:6-9, CSB)
THE GOSPEL IS ETERNAL LIFE, BUT NOT ALL WILL ACCEPT ITS TRUTH! (63-64; 66)
“63…. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are some among you who don’t believe.”
“…. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14, ESV)
THE GOSPEL SHOWS US THE WAY, AND JESUS IS THE ONLY WAY! (68-69)
“67 So Jesus said to the Twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?”
“To continue to love the world the way unbelievers do will cripple our spiritual growth and render us fruitless for God’s kingdom.” ~ Hugh Hewitt - In, But Not of: A Guide to Christian Ambition
“The human heart is an idol factory. We can make idols out of anything. Any passionate desire of our hearts that is not put there by God for His glory can become an idol” ~ John Calvin
“68 Simon Peter answered, “Lord, to whom will we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
“9 If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation” (Romans 10:9-10, CSB)
“2 In these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son. God has appointed Him heir of all things and made the universe through Him. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word. After making purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:2-3, ESV)
