What Is Covenant?

A binding, unbreakable obligation between two parties, based on unconditional love sealed by blood and sacred oath, that creates a relationship in which each party is bound by specific undertakings on each other’s behalf. The parties to the covenant place themselves under the penalty of divine retribution should they later attempt to avoid those undertakings. It is a relationship that can only be broken by death.

He is a Covenant-

“When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram” Genesis 15:17-18a (NIV)

He is a Covenant-

“HESED” - the word that describes the nature of God’s covenant with mankind; it can be interpreted as ‘loving kindness’ and ‘unfailing love.’

“It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. Know therefore, that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love (hesed) with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.” -Deuteronomy 7:7-9 (ESV)

“They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful,(hesed) slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them…”. -Nehemiah 9:17 (ESV)
