“He Came, He Saw, He Conquered, HE COMFORTS

Sunday, April 16, 2023

John 16:5-11 (NIV)**
“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth: it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.”

The Giving of the Spirit Fulfills the Glory of God Pattern that had already been established:

The Glory of God…

In the “Tent of Meeting”
Exodus 33:7-11
Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.” Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to his tent. The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.

In the “Tabernacle”
Exodus 40:34, 36
Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out.

In Jesus
Matthew 3:16
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

Luke 4:1
Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert.

“Full”- pleres – completely occupied with…
Jesus is “full” of the Spirit and he’s allowing the Spirit within Him to direct His life.

John 20:19-23 (NIV)
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”

Genesis 2:7 (NIV)
The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

God gave Natural Life to man.

John 20:22 (NIV)
… with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus gives Spiritual Life to man.

The Spirit marks the fullness of Salvation…

Ephesians 1:13-14 (NIV)
You also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession – to the praise of His glory.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV)
You… are fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household… In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his spirit.

The Spirit Supplies the Power for Evangelism…

Acts 1:8 (NIV)
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Acts 2:4 (NIV)
All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

What is this Message all About?

That which was completed at the Cross and Empty Tomb Fulfilled God’s Plan; but the Indwelling of the Spirit makes His Plan a Personal Reality.
