Luke 10:38-42
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Read Luke 10:38-40
- In what ways are you like Mary? In what ways are you like Martha?
- Tell about a time where you got stuck doing all the work while other people sat around enjoying themselves. How did you feel? How did you respond?
- What do you make of the fact that Martha doesn’t talk to Mary about her frustration?
- Can you find a passage in the gospels where Jesus instructs us on how we should respond when someone offends us or wrongs us?
Read Luke 10:41-42
- Why do you think Jesus repeats Martha’s name a second time?
- When you read these verses, what tone of voice do you imagine Jesus using?
- What ‘many things’ worry you and upset you? What does this passage teach you about dealing with those things?
- Jesus says only one thing is needed. What is that one thing?
- “Mary has chosen what is better” implies an unstated “and you, Martha, have chosen what is not.” How does this correct Martha’s sense that she is the victim of Mary’s laziness?
- How will you choose what is better this week?
