  • Who is this?

    • When you’re confused about the how, keep following the Who.

Saturday

Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. —John 12:9

Sunday (Matthew 21:1-11)

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. —Matthew 21:1-3

  • When God tells you to go and do something “ahead of you”, it’s because God has already been “ahead of you” doing something before you get there.

  • Who is this?

    • God who shows up in unexpected ways. (Isaiah 55:8-9)

    • God who is always doing more than you’re aware of at the moment, and it may not make sense until much later. (Isaiah 43:19)

Monday (Matthew 21:12-13)

Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. —Matthew 21:12

Tuesday (Matthew 21:23)

  • Who is this?

    • God who fights for us. (Luke 19:10; Isaiah 30:18)

    • God who has all authority. (Matthew 28:18-20)

  • Who is this?

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.

—Hebrews 4:14

Let’s Talk About It
As Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, He is intentionally heading to fulfill what God had purposed to do since the beginning of creation. No one understood the fullness of who Jesus was, but His disciples still followed and obeyed. When you don’t understand the “how,” keep following the “Who.” Who is Jesus? This is the most important question we must answer. He is God who shows up in unexpected ways. He has all authority, and He fights for us. Now He asks us to go ahead and fight for others.

Matthew 20:17-19; John 12:9-12; Matthew 21:1-23; Isaiah 55:8-9; Isaiah 43:19; Isaiah 30:18; Luke 19:10; Matthew 28:18-20; Hebrews 4:14-16

  • Which part of the message impacted and challenged you?

  • Read Matthew 20:17-19 and John 12:9-12. God is always doing more than we are aware of at the moment, and often it doesn’t make sense until much later. Why do you think the disciples could not understand the significance of what was happening at the moment? How have you seen this in your life?

  • Read Matthew 21:1-11. What are some of the expectations that people had for the Messiah? How did Jesus respond to them? How has God worked in your life in unexpected ways? How does this build your faith for the future?

  • When God tells you to do something “ahead of you,” He’s already doing something “ahead of you.” What is something that God has been telling you to do? What are some of your excuses or things that have hindered you from going and doing it?

  • Read Matthew 21:12-13, Luke 19:10, and Isaiah 30:18. Jesus fought for the poor, the outsiders, the broken, and the disqualified—why do you think Jesus was so passionate about fighting for them? If Jesus were walking the earth today, who would be some of the people Jesus would fight for? Why?

Here’s My Prayer

Thank You, Jesus, for being at work around me and ahead of me. Help me to see Your work so I can partner with You in what You’re doing. Thank You for being a great High Priest who has all authority and power.
