Accept No Substitute
Colossians 2:6-10

Paul is warning the Colossian believers about a threat to being mature in Jesus Christ: deceptive influences that will lead them astray. Paul gives us four areas of instruction to safeguard our faith. We’ll look at these by considering “Lord”, “Lies”, “Lollipops”, and “Linked”:

  1. Receive Christ as Lord: Walk, Rooted, Built Up, Established in Faith, Just as You Were Taught, Abounding in Thanksgiving.
  2. Counterfeits are lies that seek to deceive, supplant, or impersonate things of great value.
  3. Idols or false gospels are lollipops that we think will make us happy.
  4. Believers (people who have received Jesus as Lord and been filled with him) are linked to Christ. The whole fullness of deity dwells bodily in Jesus and he is the head of all rule and authority.

Questions for small group discussion:

  1. The enemy is called the “father of

    _”.

  2. To be able to spot a counterfeit, one must be able to discern “

    ” from “almost right”.

  3. What is an idol?

  4. Where do you see evidence of idols in your own life?

  5. What is the remedy for an idolatrous heart?
