Easter 2021 - The Finisher - Good News from God’s Word! (John 19:28-30)
John 19: 28-30 (NIV)
28 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that
the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar of wine
vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of
the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30 When he had received the drink,
Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
1. Jesus finished the work of paying our sin
"Although you wash yourself with soda and use an abundance of soap, the
stain of your guilt is still before me," declares the Sovereign Lord. (Jeremiah
2:22)
…and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin." (1 John 1:7)
2. Jesus finished the work of defeating
…Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto
Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith… (Hebrews 12:1-2)
3. Jesus will finish the work he is
Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on
to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 1:6)
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare
and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11)
For in him we live and move and have our being… (Acts 17:28)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.
Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the
righteous Judge, will award to me on that day–and not only to me, but also
to all who have longed for his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
