Sermon Notes
John 5:16-24
“16 Therefore, the Jews began persecuting Jesus because He was doing these things on the Sabbath. 17 Jesus responded to them, “My Father is still working, and I am working also.” 18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him: Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal to God. 19 Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, the Son is not able to do anything on His own, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, the Son likewise does these things. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows Him everything He is doing, and He will show Him greater works than these so that you will be amazed. 21 And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wants. 22 The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all people may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 “Truly I tell you, anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.” (John 5:16-24, CSB)
“Now, Father, glorify Me in your presence with that glory I had with You before the world existed” (John 17:5, CSB)
“…He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made” (Gen. 2:2)
“18 This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill Him: Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal to God.
“21 And just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son also gives life to whom He wants.”
“The Lord brings death and gives life; He sends some down to Sheol, and He raises others up.” (1 Samuel 2:6, CSB)
“Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death, so that we would not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead.” (1 Corinthians 1:9, CSB)
“22 The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son,”“
“Rise up, God, judge the earth, for all the nations belong to you” (Psalm 82:8, CSB)
“Because their wills are in perfect harmony, all judgement can be given to Christ in the assurance that His judgement will be the very same as the Father’s judgement.” ~ John MacArthur
“30 “God overlooked people’s ignorance about these things in earlier times, but now He commands everyone everywhere to repent of their sins and turn to Him. 31 For He has set a day for judging the world with justice by the Man He has appointed, and He proved to everyone who this is… by raising Him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31, CSB)
“For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name,10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow — in heaven and on earth and under the earth — 11 and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Phil. 2:9-11, CSB)
“23 so that all people may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
“The one who utters such things is to be dismissed with pity or scorn, or worshipped as Lord.” ~ D. A. Carson
“24 Truly I tell you, anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.”
