Romans 5:12-21

“Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—” Romans 5:12 (ESV)

The Bible speaks of 3 kinds of death

1.- ADAM’S

In Romans 5:12, the Apostle Paul summarizes the history of mankind with four, concise statements:

• “Sin came into the world through one man”

• “Death (was the result) through sin”

• “Death came to all people”

• “Because all sinned”

13 “for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.” Romans 5:13–14 (ESV)

“The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” Genesis 6:5 (ESV)

14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. James 1:14–15 (ESV)

“Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death… if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you.” James 1:15; Genesis 4:7

2.- CHRIST’S

- Rom. 5:15-21

“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.” Romans 5:15a (ESV)

Paul illustrates the power of the reverse by using the power of repetition:

We

more in Christ than we ever in Adam.

1- Much more

(vv7-9)

7 “For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.” Romans 5:7–9 (ESV)

2- Much more

(v10)

“For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.” Romans 5:10 (ESV)

3- Much more

(v15)

“But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many.” Romans 5:15

4.- Much more

(vv16-17)

“For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:17

5.- Much more

(vv20-21)

“Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 5:20–21

“So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’” John 3:7 (NLT)
