Day 11 – Tough Faith for Tough Times

Read: I Thessalonians 3: 1 – 13

Timothy’s positive report that the new believers in Thessalonica were standing strong and even growing in their faith brought joy and encouragement to Paul. Paul continued to express his concern for the Thessalonians by affirming their spiritual growth and by reassuring them that he would continue to pray for them. He knew the importance of commending others for their spiritual progress, but he also realized that spiritual maturity is something that should never be considered complete.

Paul knew that tough times were most likely in the future for the Thessalonians because of their new faith and their stand for Christ in their wicked culture. A group of folks in our culture today are convinced that tough times are ahead and they spend significant time and resources in preparing for these tough times. They are often called “preppers”. They stockpile food, water, weapons, and anything else that they think might be needed to get through the tough times that they feel are on the way.

Christ followers today would do well to follow the example of these “preppers” by actively working to build up their reserve of faith so they are better equipped to handle tough times that might be coming. Knowledge and memorization of God’s word, a strong and vibrant prayer life, a close group of Christian friends, are all tools which can help us to not fall away when difficult times and persecution come.

James 1:2 tells us “Consider it pure joy, my brethren, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” That’s a far cry from a reaction that questions God and even blames him for difficulties.

Prayer time: Lord, give me a better understanding of trials and tribulations in my life. Help me to never waver in my faith and confidence in you even though tough times come my way. Point out fellow believers in my life who may be struggling with tough times and help me to be an encourager to them. Also, give me opportunities to speak a word for you when tough times come into the lives of my unsaved friends.

Final thoughts: Adversity in life is not an accident – it is a divine appointment. If the conditions in your life are currently calm and tranquil, take advantage and do the things necessary to work on your faith. Spend time in the word, pray without ceasing and look for opportunities to encourage others in their faith. If conditions are stormy and turbulent, know that God knows, He allowed them, and He is expecting you to hold strong in your faith.
