Mark 1:1 (NRSV)

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

SESSION VIDEO :: THE GOSPEL (Mark Moore)

Key Points

  1. The word gospel literally means “good news” and was originally a political term.

  2. Mark was the first Christian writer to use the term; he did so in direct opposition to the emperor’s claims to be the ruler of the world.

  3. Even more than the description of Jesus’s life, the gospel is the announcement of the church. Our prime directive is to proclaim Jesus as the one true king of the world.

FOR REFLECTION

  1. Share with the group the best news you have ever received.

  2. What do you think of when you hear the word gospel?

  3. Summarize what Mark Moore defined as gospel or “good news.”

  4. What is significant about the term “good news” being transformed from a political term to a religious term?

  5. How do you think the political realm would have reacted to Mark’s use of a “good news singular”? How would the culture have reacted?

  6. How does a modern presentation of the Gospel need to be framed to be effective? List what has been done in the past that is no longer useful and then list the elements or methods of what would connect with people today.

ACTION STEP

As a group, formulate a simple statement of the gospel that is less than 30 seconds and that people in our modern culture would understand. You can then use this statement as a tool when evangelizing.
