1. Listen to the Message
Today’s Scriptures:
Genesis 1:1-2:14
CREATION
Everything was created by God and did not evolve by chance.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was wihout form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. —Genesis 1:1-3

… God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. —I John 1:5b
Everything was prefect without sin or death.
And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day. —Genesis 1:29-31
God created man in His own image.
Then God said, “Let Us make mankind in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the livestock and over all the earth, and over every crawling thing that crawls on the earth.” So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. —Genesis 1:26-27

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation: for by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. —Colossians 1:15-17
My Additional Notes:
2. Discuss in a Life Group
READ TOGETHER:
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was a formless and desolate emptiness, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. —Genesis 1:1-3
READ TOGETHER:
By faith we understand that the world has been created by the word of God so that what is seen has not been made out of things that are visible. —Hebrews 11:3
READ TOGETHER:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him not even one thing came into being that has come into being. —John 1:1-3
DISCUSS
Compare Genesis 1:1-3 with Hebrews 11:3
When God created the heavens and the earth, how did He do it?
What does this say about the power of His Word?
If we are made in the image of God, what implications does this have for our words to both create and destroy?
DISCUSS
Compare Genesis 1:1-3 with John 1:1-3
Many people think of Jesus as only appearing in the New Testament. There is the “God of the Old Testament” and then Jesus in the New Testament. What does John 1:1-3 mean for what happened in Genesis 1:1-3?
Why do you think John started off his Gospel this way?
DISCUSS
Name and discuss some lines of evidence about the universe and creation that clearly demonstate evertyhing was created by God and did not evolve by chance.
READ TOGETHER:
Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree [b]which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you; and to every animal of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to everything that moves on the earth [d]which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so. 31 And God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. —Genesis 1:29-31
DISCUSS
Over and over God said everthing He made was “very good.” Discuss how the original creation was perfect without sin or death. Discuss some things that we may deal with today that did not exist before the fall.
DISCUSS
What does it mean to be made “in the image of God “? Why do you think we look like we do? What abilities are found in humans that are also found in God, like the ability to speak, reason, and have a will?
DISCUSS
Do you really see people all around you as images of God? Why do you think we often miss this miracle that is right before our eyes most of the time? How can seeing them not only as images of God, but images that God died for change our behavior towards others>
