SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE

Big Idea

“And this fifth commandment gives God’s people an opportunity to demonstrate the life-changing power of the gospel. For it changes how we respond to abandonment and abuse. It shapes how we love and care for those who are in need. It influences how we submit ourselves to God and to the people he’s appointed to be our spiritual fathers. It dictates how we interact with all people, for we’re to be people who give honor to all.”

What did we learn about God and his process of freeing people before he gave them his expectations? Why is understanding this order so important?

Read: Exodus 20:12

Why is the fact that mothers were included in this commandment so unusual?

How is the Christian faith different from old religions when it comes to honoring women?

Read Exodus 21:15, 17, Ephesians 6:1-3, 1 Timothy 5:3-4, 8, 17, Hebrews 13:17

How do we honor other people? What are some ways we dishonor others?

In what ways do we see a parent-child relationship in the church? What is the responsibility of the elders? What are those under their care challenged to do?

How are we to respond when honoring is hard? Why should you obey the commandment even if you have been a victim of abuse by those in authority or leadership?

Why can you look to Jesus as your example in following this commandment in the hard times?

How does honoring others set us apart from those who do not?
