Message Notes
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. —1 John 4:4 (NIV)
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. —1 John 5:1-5 (NIV)
How Do We Overcome?
1. We see ourselves the way God sees us.
If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. —1 John 3:20 (NIV)
2. We grow in faith.
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. —Hebrews 11:6 (NIV)
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. —Romans 10:17 (NASB)
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.” —Romans 1:17 (NASB)
3. We lean into the power of the Holy Spirit.
But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth. —1 John 2:20 (NIV)
