Purity, Marriage & Promises

Matthew 5:27-36

Introduction

  1. There is a constant desire to hide behind the law and this affects biblical relationships
  2. Are you courageous enough to go the deep places of your heart?
  3. Things that need to be evident in us to make this possible:
    a. Trusting Jesus—Proverbs 3:5-6
    b. Hunger for God—James 4:8
    c. Humility—James 4:6
    d. Desperation—Psalm 63
  4. Jesus flips the script on three issues
    a. Adultery
    b. Marriage
    c. Vows

I.

Begins In Our (27-30)

A. Pharisees focused on the 7th Commandment in Exodus 20, don’t commit adultery
B. They totally ignored the 10th Commandment concerning coveting your neighbor’s wife
C. Jesus expands adultery to our heart
The one who looks at another with lust to stimulate themselves is already committing adultery

  1. The sin of the heart is as bad as the actual act
  2. Jesus compares murder to hate as an example

D. Lust is selfishness to an extreme

  1. Feeding the flesh
  2. Results in our bondage: that which brings temporary pleasure turns to addictive behavior
  3. Lust is not limited to sexual desires

E. Physical lust distorts God’s plan for our sexuality
Pornography has become the main thing that is
destroying God’s plan for sex

  1. It is flesh driven
  2. It is demonic driven
  3. It is all around our world’s system

F. Jesus uses figurative language to communicate the desperation that is needed for deliverance (29-30)


  1. Do whatever is necessary to become free
  2. Eternity is in the balance
  3. Steps to take:

    a. Admit you have a problem
    b. Denounce it in Jesus name
    c. Ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit
    d. Be accountable
    e. Seek counseling

Key Point—Lusting for that which is not ours will ultimately destroy us

II.

Is for a (31-32)

A. Biblical view on marriage

  1. It is for a lifetime—Genesis 2:24
  2. Man’s hard heart has affected marriage—Deuteronomy 24:1-4
  3. God hates divorce—Malachi 2:16
  4. There are limits on divorce—I Corinthians 7:15; Matthew 19:4-6

B. Jewish thought on divorce:

  1. Liberal—which believed that there were grounds for divorce and all that was needed was a paper to make it so
  2. Conservative—which believed there was no grounds for divorce
    The Greek word for adultery, “porneia” which is translated for various types of sexual immorality

C. There are four Christian views on divorce and remarriage

  1. No divorce and no remarriage
  2. Divorce, but no remarriage
  3. Divorce and remarriage for adultery and desertion
  4. Divorce and remarriage for under a variety of circumstances

D. We need to focus more on what makes marriage work:

  1. Move toward oneness
  2. Humility from selfishness
  3. Friendship for a life time
  4. Being on mission
  5. Love that is growing

Key Point—Marriage is for a lifetime

III.

Your (33-37)

A. Jesus’ answer:

  1. Live your life with truth
  2. Be consistent
  3. Follow through with what you say

B. We live in world where we need:

  1. Lawyers
  2. Contracts
  3. Courts
    We live in a world where we can’t trust one another

C. Steps in living a life of truth:

  1. Don’t over-promise
  2. Don’t try to impress
  3. Find your radical security in Jesus

D. Living our life so that we are consistent with our words demands the transformation of the Gospel

Key point—Live out truth in word and deed

Call to Action

  1. Confess your lusts and seek deliverance
  2. If married, commit to the covenant of marriage for a life time
  3. Pray that your heart is aligned with His so you can be transformed and live out truth in word and deed
