Hebrews - worksheet 2
Jesus exalted - Hebrews 1:5-14
NKJV heading is The Son Exalted Above Angels
Controversy resolved
This passage in Hebrews refers to Psalm 8:4 and Psalm 144:3. And in Hebrews 2:5–9 Psalm 8:4–6 is applied to Jesus. Psalm 8:4-5 says, speaking of Jesus, 4What is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? 5For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor. It might be confusing that the author of the letter to the Hebrews states that Jesus is superior to the angels. This was an issue in the eyes of the first century Jewish Christian church. Because the law of Moses was delivered by angels. But now, through New Testament revelation we know for sure that Jesus is superior to angels. Because individual angels are not sons of God, and Jesus is the Son of God (Psalm 2:7, 2 Samuel 7:14). Jesus receives worship from the angels (Revelation 5:11-12). Angels are lower than Jesus. We don’t read anywhere that Jesus died for them or shed blood for them. Jesus did more for us than He ever did for angels.
Hebrews 1:5-14 (NKJV) says 5For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son”? 6But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him.” 7And of the angels He says: “Who makes His angels spirits and His ministers a flame of fire.” 8But to the Son He says: “Your throne, O God, is
Q1 In verse 6 we read that God has brought the firstborn into the world, let all the angels worship Him. How do you interpret that? Was Jesus the first person ever born? Or does it mean that Jesus was the creator of humanity to be born, having all the authority, just as in ancient families the firstborm has the headship? Do you agree that this title of firstborn is a title of exaltation?
Q2 Read Psalm 104:4. It says Who makes His angels spirits, His ministers a flame of fire. Who is “His”? Do the angels belong to Jesus?
Q3 Review verses 8-12 (where Psalm 45:6-7 is quoted). What attributes are given to Jesus from the mouth of God? When God says to the Son “Your throne, O God”, does that mean that Jesus is God?
Q4 Look at verse 9b. Explain the trinity from this verse.
Q5 Look at verse 10, where Psalm 102:25-27 is quoted.
Who laid the foundation of the earth? And the heavens are the work of whos hands?
Q6 Prove from verses 11 and 12 that Jesus is unchangeable/immutable.
Q7 Explain why the writer of Hebrews uses rhetorical questions in verses 13 (quoting Psalm 110:1) and 14.
Now, sing this song.
In closing, praise the Lord for the promise in verse 14, where we as saved people will once be served by angels.
