Sermon Title: Triumph Over Temptations
Scripture: Proverbs 25:28
Speaker: Pastor Mark Pospisil
Questions:
How have the boundaries that you have set up in your life protected you from yielding to temptations?
In Proverbs 7:4, we are urged to consider wisdom as our “sister,” and knowledge as our “intimate friend.” Remember that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of both wisdom and knowledge; and that since Jesus is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:30), this means that the fear of the Lord points to our need to obediently follow Jesus. Why is this an important part of triumphing over temptation?
In Proverbs 7:6-9, the young man devoid of understanding decided to walk near the house of the adulterous woman…at night…when it was dark…when no one could see him. When it comes to setting up boundaries to protect against temptations, why would it be important to set those boundaries with a considerable “margin,” far enough away from the temptation?
In Psalm 119:11, the psalmist says that he hides God’s word in his heart so that he might not sin against God—another way of saying he commits God’s word to memory. A similar instruction is given in Proverbs 7:1-3. How does memorizing Scripture help when facing temptations?
Hebrews 4:15 states that Jesus was tempted in all things as we are. The difference with Jesus is that He never yielded to a temptation one time. How does knowing that Jesus faced the same temptations as you, yet defeated every one of them, help you in your fight against your temptations?
How did Jesus use Scripture to defeat His temptations as recorded in Matthew 4:1-11, and Luke 4:1-13?
In what ways can a growing knowledge of God’s word help you to establish boundaries in your life to help you to triumph over temptation?
When it comes to battling and triumphing over temptation, in what ways can belonging to a small group help?
