“The Sermon on the Mount is the sum and substance of the Jesus way.”
- Douglas Webster
1. Who is truly
“blessed”: makarios =
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 5:3

2. How do Jesus Followers
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Matthew 5:17-18
Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:19-20
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up

3. What do Jesus Followers
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” Matthew 7:24-25
QUESTIONS For personal reflection or group discussion
1. What is something that stood out to you in the sermon last weekend and why? Rather than speaking from the temple to the most powerful Israelites in Jerusalem, Jesus heads into rural Galilee to speak with average people. Why do you think He chose this location and these people? How do you think the original audience would have reacted to Jesus’ teachings (see Matthew 7:28-29)?
2. Please read Jeremiah 31:33 and Matthew 7:24-25. What is the ultimate goal of studying God’s word? What are some of the practical challenges you face to following Jesus’ instruction in your everyday life?
3. Take some time over the week and read the whole Sermon on the Mount (Matthew chapters 5-7). What are some things that stand out to you? What questions do you have? How does this passage encourage you?
