Naham (Heb) To feel sorry; to lament; to grieve; to sigh or to groan; consolation; comfort; avenge correlation; refers to loss of breath while experiencing intense emotion.

Shubh (Heb) To turn back; to make a radical change in attitude toward sin and God – it
includes both the conscious moral separation, and a personal decision to come back to God.

Teshuvah (Hebrew) “repentance” means return, as if turning back to something you’ve strayed or looked away from.

Metanoia (Greek) The intellectual and spiritual change which occurs when a sinner turns to God. The meaning of metanoia is “having another mind” or “to change one’s mind, attitude, and purpose regarding sin.” It describes an inner turning around. (Translated as conversion/reorientation)

Epistrepho (Greek) indicates the distinct change which results from repentance, a change of position in relation to God. This word can be summarized as a spiritual transition from sin to God, from death to life.

Repentance: A command; a gift; it is an about face from sin; the act of acknowledging and regretting one’s wrongdoings then taking action to change for the better.

Homologeo: to say the same thing; confess; declare; say the same thing that God says about your sin.

Regeneration: rebirth; born again; a supernatural act; God’s giving of new spiritual life to a believer; it is the work of God alone, a process that begins with faith in Christ and moves the believer to sanctification.

Sin: basic to all sin is selfishness; loving your own ways opposed to godliness; sin can be that of commission – doing anything that is not God’s will for us or omission – failing to do what God does will; rebellion and disobedience is sin’s hallmark.

Hamartia (Greek) failure to be the person God intended; it is an archer’s term to miss the target; Greek word describing sin in a threefold way:

1. The source of wrong action
2. A power which acts through the members of our physical bodies
3. Wrong Action
   Iniquity: Avon – Hebrew Avah – moral failure; wickedness
    A twisted road
    Malformed back
    A dazed and confused state
    Distorted behavior
    The consequences of distorted behavior such as suffering, broken relationships,
   and cycles of retaliation

Transgression: Pesha – relational consequence of sin when the trust of others is violated; to be a transgressor is to be a hypocrite or deceitful; breaking trust

Sin: Khata (Heb) to fail; to miss the goal; this failure most related to the failure to love God and others
