Sermon Title: Part 10 – The Right Response to Grace
Scripture: Romans 3:27-31
Speaker: Pastor Mark Pospisil

Questions:

  1. What is boasting according to the Bible? Why are people so prone to boast in what they do or accomplish?

  2. Romans 3:27 says that any boasting of being righteous by observing the law has been “excluded”—literally, “shut out”—due to the new law: the law of faith. By believing Jesus to give the gift of everlasting life, there is therefore now no boasting. What action(s) should replace any boasting? What should our response to God’s grace be?

  3. In Romans 3:28, Paul says that we “hold,” the word literally meaning “to calculate.” Paul “calculates” that a man is justified, “declared to be righteous” by God, by faith alone. As you see it, how does this action by God illustrate God’s grace?

  4. What are some of the ways that we as believers have received God’s grace? Why is it important to remember these ways and share them with others?

  5. In Romans 3:31, Paul asks a rhetorical question: whether this faith in Jesus “overthrows,” “renders null and void,” the law—the answer to which is obviously no. But he then states that on the contrary, this faith in Jesus “upholds the law.” How would you explain the fact that our faith in Jesus upholds the law?

  6. If it is Jesus who has fulfilled every aspect of the law—including making Himself to be the ultimate and total sacrifice—how does this truth affect your joy in this present moment?

  7. Read Jeremiah 9:23-24. According to this passage, why is it so important that we focus on knowing God? God states that He practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness on the earth. In what ways have you experienced His steadfast love, justice, and righteousness?
