Getting Victory Over Sin - the Process of Sanctification
Romans 6: 1-23
Paul ends chapter 5 with these words (5:20,21)
“… but where sin abounded, grace abounded much more so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Paul anticipates the question (or the thought) – “…so the more I sin, the more grace I receive!”
Paul shifts gears in chapter 6 - HOW TO FIGHT THE SIN BATTLE
Chapters 1-5 Paul has presented our POSITION IN Christ.
Chapters 6-8 Paul is telling us HOW to LIVE OUT OUR LIVES FOR Christ.
SANCTIFICATION is the process by which believers grow in maturity in Christ.
Chapters 1-5 Paul’s argument is we are DEAD IN SIN.
Chapters 6-8 We are now DEAD TO SIN.
In Chapter 6 “dead, died, death” is used 14x.
When Christ Died – we died too! The POWER of the sin nature died.
Romans 6:6 …”our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.”
The “old you” was crucified with Christ – BEFORE (you were saved) YOU were on the throne of your life but NOW (after conversion) Jesus is King.
WHY do I still sin?
Because you and I give CPR to the old sin nature!
Paul provides us with THREE commandments to have Victory over Sin.
1. KNOW (ginosko) - Romans 6:1-10
A new four-letter F word to keep out of your vocabulary…FEEL.
Rely on the facts – the TRUTH of God’s Word, rather than your “feelings”…We must KNOW!!!!
Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ…
2 Timothy 1:12 For I know Whom I have believed….
1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by.
2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
It amazes me what we will believe as fact from social media! INTENTIONAL misinformation or disinformation that we come to “know” as truth.
2. RECKON (logizomai) – an accounting term: conclude, take into inventory
.
Romans 6:11 “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This term/word “reckon” is used 11 x in Romans 4. It means to “count, consider, impute, account, CONCLUDE” that you are DEAD to sin but ALIVE in Christ.
Satan’s plan of action never changes.
God declares…
Satan denies…
…You must DECIDE!
We are not “sinless” but now we Sin LESS.
The process is called “sanctification”
I have RECKONED this as absolute truth…
NO condemnation (8:1)
No separation (8:38 39) For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
3. Last command…. We must Yield.
Yield means to PRESENT.
Romans 3:12-23
Romans 3:19 “For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness (sanctification).
Ephesians 2:1-10
