Running From Nineveh … Week 3

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” —Jonah 3:1-2 (NIV)

God is giving Jonah a second chance.

What is still in the way of God having His way?

Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. —Jonah 3:3 (NIV)

What sorrow awaits Nineveh, the city of murder and lies! She is crammed with wealth and is never without victims. Hear the crack of whips, the rumble of wheels! Horses’ hooves pound,
and chariots clatter wildly. See the flashing swords and glittering spears as the charioteers charge past! There are countless casualties, heaps of bodies— so many bodies that people stumble over them. —Nahum 3:1-3 (NLT)

The ONLY way to build trust is by relinquishing control and stepping out in faith knowing God has your best interest at heart.

Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” —Jonah 3:4 (NIV)

God often uses ordinary words to accomplish extraordinary purposes!

The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. —Jonah 3:5 (NIV)

But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. —Mark 13:11 (NLT)

When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. —Jonah 3:6 (NIV)

Let God be the one to determine the ceiling of your impact.

This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles:
Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” —Jonah 3:7-9 (NIV)

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. —Jonah 3:10 (NIV)

Your second chance may be the only chance for someone else.

You saying YES to God could help shape lives for all eternity… Never underestimate what God will do with a simple act of obedience.
