SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE
CONVERSATION STARTER
When thinking of the people in our church family, who do you think of when you hear the term “humble servant”? How come? What are some ways you serve our family? Or what are some areas you’d like to start serving in?
DEEPER
READ: Philippians 2:1-18
How do verses 1-2 set the stage for our study on humility? If you were to reflect on the application of verses 1-2 in our lives and in our church, how would you say we’re doing? Where is there alignment? Where is there misalignment?
What are some specific examples of how we can work hard to maintain unity? Is there anything we should divide with others over? What kinds of things should we not divide over?
In light of verse 3-5, what are some areas you tend to struggle with selfishness? What are some specific ways you can look out for the interests of others in the coming week?
In verses 6-8, Paul describes Jesus’ humility in his birth, life, and death and burial. How does this example challenge our understanding of what it means to humble ourselves? Can you think of other biblical examples that illustrate similar acts of humility and self-sacrifice that we can imitate?
Verse 12 begins with the word “therefore”. How do the following verses (12-18) connect to what Paul said about Christ’s example of humility in the previous verses?
Verse 14 commands believers to do everything without grumbling or arguing. How does our attitude while serving affect the effectiveness of our witness to others? Are there specific areas in your life where you struggle to serve joyfully and without complaint?
What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
