Blessed are the Peacemakers

Who are we?
What do we do?
Why do we do it?

God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God. —Matthew 5:9

Peacemakers and children

Eirenopoioi – Those who make peace

“Blessed the peacemakers, for they sons of God will be called.”

We are called to bring peace to the world just as Jesus accomplished peace between us and the Father.

Main Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 5:18-21 and Romans 12:15-21

Who are we?
We are called.

And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. 19 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. 20 So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” —2 Corinthians 5:18-20a

What do we do?
Bring peace.

Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all! 17 Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. 18 Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the Lord. 20 Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” 21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good. —Romans 12:15-21

Why do we do it?
Because Jesus accomplished peace between us and the Father.

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. —2 Corinthians 5:21

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9 And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. —Romans 5:8-10

Huios - One who depends on and follows; a student, a pupil, or a disciple

And he sometimes puts himself between the two, when they are very angry, and takes the blows from both sides, for he knows that Jesus did the same. He took the blows from his Father and from us also, that by suffering in our place, peace might be made between God and man. —Charles Spurgeon
