MARK 3:1-6

Mark 2:1-3:6 consists of five scenes, each containing a confrontation with Jesus and his powerful responsive word.

The Law of the Sabbath
• Jesus elicits a response of from the Pharisees, indicating their shame and defeat.
• The law protecting the Sabbath had lost its life-giving intent, and instead became a .
• The Mishnah (Oral Torah/Law) forbids specific acts on the Sabbath.

The Heart of the Sabbath
• Jesus’ teaching on the Kingdom of God contradicts the strict legalism of the Pharisaical Law and restores God-exalting in obedience.
• On the Seventh Day of creation, God rested as the cosmic King sitting on his throne over all creation (Genesis 2:1-3).
• Hebrews points to an eschatological Sabbath rest we will experience, like God does.
• God and commanded in order that his children would experience life-giving .
