From 1946 to 1964 over 77 million babies were born in the United States of America, becoming the largest generation in the history of our country to that point.
And all of those babies born in those years (Baby Boomer Generation) have been described as the “pig and the python” to describe this bulge of humanity that moved through culture and life and changed everything in its path.
And like most things with Baby Boomers, they have changed everything about culture, aging, and retirement and will continue to do so until they die.
And honestly because of their sheer numbers Boomers in large part have been setting the agenda in culture for years.
Now remember, W.W.2 was over, soldiers came back home and started families and people were feeling good about things and lots of babies were born! And these babies were born into a time of great affluence.
Baby Boomers were born into unprecedented economic expansion never seen before in our country but because of that there were a lot of expectations put on the Boomer generation.
Baby Boomer parents believed: Their kids would be the generation that would change the world and that their kids would bring an end to all wars, poverty, and disease.
And that why in 1967 Time Magazine (so bullish on Baby Boomers) named them “Man of the Year” (the whole generation) (show pic) because they believed the Boomers were going to change the world.
And Boomers were bred to believe that and that has been a driving force in their lives. The problem is…it didn’t work out the way they or their parents thought.
Baby Boomers grew up in one of the most unstable decades in history.
Boomers Life Changing Experiences:
- The assassination of President John F. Kennedy
- Cuban Missile Crisis
- Vietnam War
- Civil Rights Riots
- Watergate
- Music
- Man on the Moon
Now spiritually Boomers were shaped by several things, I want to highlight two:
- Boomers were born into a period of
When you are born into a period affluence you live differently than you would being born into a period of depression.
-Born into period of depression – primary need is survival.
-Born into period of affluence – primary need is significance and meaning.
- Boomers were shaped spiritually by
And that brings us to today – the generation that protested and rebelled against anyone and anything now find themselves in their early 60’s to mid to late 70’s.
So, you have older Boomers moving into elderhood and younger Boomers still working and wanting to be impactful. And that’s where the Church and the Boomers can come together to really make a difference in this world because through the Church Jesus offers Boomers a life of significance.
And just as the “Silents” have a role – to walk alongside others and pour into them wisdom in order to leave a legacy…
Following the Master, Boomers are called to use their experience and maturity to encourage and equip others to follow Him.
Boomers, the Church needs you to lead – to get out in front and lead because you have unique gifts and skills you bring to the table and one we need is this:
- Boomers bring
It is very easy for the Church to forget that we are in the business of changing people and changing the world.
