Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon

Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:

The New City Catechism

Lord’s Day 3

How Many Persons Are There in God?
There are three persons in the one true and living God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are the same in substance, equal in power and glory. (2 Corinthians 13:14)

Scripture

Matthew 28:18-20 - (English Standard Version)

18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Understanding and Applying

  1. Authority: What enables the Son of Man to declare, “all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (v. 18; John 12:31-32; Philippians 2:8-11; Colossians 1:15-18)?

  2. Foundation: On what grounds does the church find her calling and commission (v. 18; Ephesians 2:19-21, 3:10-11)?

  3. Commission: How have you seen the church veer away from its primary responsibility or commit to good but lesser things (vv. 19-20)?

Baptize: Why is baptism an essential element to making disciples (Acts 2:38-41, 16:14-15; Colossians 2:11-12)?

Teach: How is the church to carry out its responsibility to teach (Romans 10:14-15; Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:16; 2 Timothy 4:1-2)?

4. Unity: What does unity have to do with the Great Commission (John 17:20-23; Ephesians 4:1-3, 11-13)?
