A Beautiful Future
1The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; 2to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3to grant to those who mourn in Zion— to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified. (Isaiah 61:1-3, ESV)
For you shall be like an oak whose leaf withers, and like a garden without water. (Isaiah 1:30)
1. Short-term frustration can become long-term
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? (Matthew 6:25)
O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? (1 Corinthians 15:55)
2. Short-term grief can become long-term
Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
3. Short-term condemnation can become long-term
…Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners… (1 Timothy 1:15)
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isaiah 53:5-6)
