WK 1 | Devotional Guide for September 3-7, 2024
Message Recap:
In this message, we’re challenged to rethink our approach to politics as followers of Christ. The core idea is that government is part of God’s plan, established from creation to bring order and reflect His design. We’re reminded of Jesus’ words in John 19, acknowledging Pilate’s God-given authority, which affirms this divine purpose for government. However, this doesn’t mean God endorses everything rulers do. Instead, He holds them accountable for their actions. As Christians, our engagement in politics should be guided by three principles: proclaiming Jesus, actively loving our neighbor, and seeking justice for all. These principles, rooted in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), the Great Commandment (Luke 10:25-37), and the Great Requirement (Micah 6:8), should shape our political views and actions. We’re encouraged to evaluate our political engagement through this lens, asking ourselves if our positions truly reflect these core Christian values.

Devotional Guide:
Day 1: God’s Divine Plan for Governance - Genesis 1:26-28, Romans 13:1-7
As we reflect on the creation story, we see God’s intention for humanity to steward His creation with order and purpose. This divine mandate extends to the establishment of governance structures. While human attempts at ruling often fall short, we must remember that God remains sovereign over all earthly authorities.
Today, consider how you can honor God’s plan for governance in your life, even when faced with imperfect leadership. Pray for wisdom to discern God’s will in civic matters and for the courage to stand for justice and righteousness in your community.
Day 2: Proclaiming Christ in All Spheres of Life - Matthew 28:18-20, Colossians 4:2-6
The Great Commission calls us to make disciples in all nations and contexts, including the political arena. As followers of Christ, our primary allegiance is to His kingdom, transcending party lines and political ideologies.
Reflect on how you can be a witness for Christ in your political engagement. Are your words and actions proclaiming the gospel, even in contentious discussions? Ask God to help you prioritize His mission above personal political gain and to give you opportunities to share His love with others, regardless of their political affiliations.
Day 3: Loving Your Neighbor Through Civic Engagement - Luke 10:25-37, James 2:14-17
Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan challenges us to expand our understanding of who our neighbor is and how we can love them. In our political involvement, we must consider how our choices and actions impact others, especially the vulnerable and marginalized.
Today, examine your political views through the lens of loving your neighbor. Are your positions motivated by self-interest or by a genuine desire to see others flourish? Pray for God to give you a heart of compassion and the wisdom to advocate for policies that reflect His love for all people.
Day 4: Seeking Justice for All - Micah 6:8, Amos 5:21-24
God’s heart for justice is evident throughout Scripture. As His followers, we are called to “act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God.” This mandate should inform our political engagement, pushing us to advocate for fairness and equity for all people.
Reflect on areas where injustice persists in your community or nation. How can you be a voice for the voiceless and work towards systemic change? Ask God to reveal any blind spots in your understanding of justice and to guide you in pursuing His righteousness in all areas of life.
Day 5: Walking Humbly in a Divided World - Philippians 2:1-11, 1 Peter 3:8-17
In a world often characterized by political polarization, Christ calls us to a different path – one of humility, unity, and sacrificial love. As we engage in political discourse, we must remember that our ultimate example is Jesus, who humbled Himself for our sake.
Today, consider how you can embody Christ-like humility in your political conversations and actions. Are you willing to listen to those with differing views and seek common ground? Pray for the Holy Spirit to cultivate in you a spirit of gentleness and respect, even in the face of opposition, that you may be a peacemaker and a true representative of Christ in the political sphere.
