SERMON DISCUSSION GUIDE
CONVERSATION STARTER
Where are you seeing exhortation, encouragement, or comforting that strengthens and equips our church family? In what way is the body of Christ being strengthened and equipped through exhortation, encouragement, or comforting at our church?
DEEPER
Read Romans 12:4-8
Jesus said in John 14:15-17 that God would send a Helper (Comforter) to abide with believers forever - the Spirit of truth. Exhortation, encouragement, and comforting are inspired by the Helper, the Holy Spirit. How can we, as Christians, be sure that the Holy Spirit is leading us as we use this gift?
What are some goals of exhortation, encouragement, or comforting of others? How will God be glorified in them?
Have you had an opportunity to exhort, encourage, or comfort someone? How did you do it? Share about the experience and the result.
Have you experienced exhortation, encouragement, or comfort from the Holy Spirit or from another person? Share about the experience and the result.
Who is God placing in your life now whom you can exhort, encourage, or comfort with the help of the Holy Spirit? How can you discern the words or action items that would help?
Who is God placing in your life now to whom you can reach out for exhortation, encouragement, or comfort? Do you have to go it alone?
How can you face affliction, uncertainty, sufferings, broken-heartedness, and persecution with confidence? With strength?
What stood out to you in this week’s sermon? What were your biggest takeaways?
Group prayer activity: Pray for opportunities for your group members, led by the Holy Spirit, to offer words and actions that will exhort, encourage, or comfort others and glorify God. Also, pray for members to grow in wisdom and living as Word and Spirit Christians.
