It’s All God’s Anyways

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

Tithing is giving God the first ten percent of your income, with the understanding that it all came from God in the first place and it all belongs to Him, anyway.

Where did this concept come from?

Before the Mosaic Law was given, Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizedek (a pre-incarnate appearance of Jesus. Genesis 14:18-20). 500 plus years later, Moses reiterated the tithe in the Mosiac Law (Leviticus 27:30). Giving God 10% of our material things is an act of worship and a demonstration of trust. You give God 10% of your gross income and trust him to stretch the remaining 90% to go further than the original 100%. The principle of tithing comes from the command to put God first in everything. To put him first in your priorities, your relationships, in what you love. God wants to be number one and tithing is the best tangible expression of that.

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” - Matthew 6:21

What we do with money signals where our heart is. Why we give comes from ancient days and tithing still applies today. You can do it and will be blessed for it. That is a promise of God.

  1. How much time do you spend on worrying about money?

  2. Is God number one in your life? How is that demonstrated? How can it be seen?

Consider This

“We have also seen God take the 90% we have left and stretch it to meet 110% of our needs. That’s a biblical principle that you can only learn by applying.” Pastor John.

  1. What choice does each one of us need to make according to Matthew 6:24?

  2. What did Jesus say about tithing in Matthew 23:23?

  3. Read Mark 12:41-44. What did God think about what the widow gave? How do you think the widow felt before and after she gave? Why do you think she gave so sacrificially?

  4. Read Luke 16:10-11. What is the principle here? How does it apply to your life? What are the costs and what are the rewards for following this principle?

  5. The Philippians gave generously out of their poverty. The Apostle Paul told them, “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” - Philip. 4:19

    • Can you remember and share a time when God provided your needs?

  6. Are you content with what you have? Consider Hebrews 13:5. How can believers be content with what they have?

  7. What part does faith play in the call to give in Malachi 3:10? What are the rewards?

  8. What is the principle of sowing and reaping in 2 Corinthians 9:6-8? How does this apply to your life?

Moving Forward – Application

The height of ingratitude is when we refuse to share with God what he has given us. God made the things that make your things. He owns everything because he made everything. It’s His, all His, and giving Him back 10% of what He has given you is a tangible act of worship.

  1. If you reap what you sow, what step of faith could you take regarding your finances this week?

  2. Would you consider writing up a budget and include tithing as the first payment you make?

  3. Seek God in prayer this week and ask Him to show you how to rearrange your finances to put him first.

  4. Memorize Philippians 4:19 this week.
