God-Breathed Living
Day 134: Don’t Skip the Upper Room
Today’s Reading:
Joshua 1–3, Psalm 115, Proverbs 12, Acts 20
Today’s Scripture: Acts 20:8 (NLT)
“The upstairs room where we met was lighted with many flickering lamps.”
Devotional:
It’s one small line in a big story—“The upstairs room where we met was lighted with many flickering lamps.” But this detail reveals a beautiful truth.
Paul was preaching late into the night. The church wasn’t in a cathedral or on a big stage. It was gathered in a tucked-away upstairs room—lamps flickering, people leaning in, the Word going deep.
And right in the middle of this sacred moment, a young man named Eutychus nods off and falls out of the window. Three stories down. Dead.
But Paul doesn’t panic. He pauses the sermon, goes down, and embraces him—and God brings Eutychus back to life.
That’s what the upper room is all about.
It’s the place where the Word is preached, the Spirit moves, and the broken are restored.
The upper room may look different today—your living room, a Sunday service, a midweek house church, your early morning Bible and coffee. But wherever God’s people gather with hunger and expectation, it becomes a space for miracles.
You may be tired. You may be drifting. But don’t skip the upper room.
There’s grace there. There’s light there. And there’s resurrection power waiting to meet you in the flickering glow.
Live inspired.
Reflection Questions:
- Have you been treating God’s presence as optional or essential?
- Who is in your life that may be spiritually “falling out of the window” and needs you to help restore them?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You for inviting me into Your presence. Thank You that You meet us in the upper room—where we gather hungry for You. Forgive me when I’ve treated spiritual community and time in Your Word as something I can skip. Reignite my heart with hunger, and help me keep my spiritual lamp burning. If I’m drifting, pull me back. And if someone near me has fallen, give me the courage to stop everything and bring them back to life. In Your holy and wonderful name I pray, amen.
Digging Deeper:
Joshua 1–3 is a baton-passing moment. Moses is gone, and Joshua is handed the leadership mantle. God’s word to him is repeated: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid. This isn’t motivational fluff—it’s divine marching orders. Rahab’s unexpected faith in chapter 2 reminds us that God is already at work behind the scenes. And when they cross the Jordan on dry ground in chapter 3, it’s clear—God hasn’t stopped parting waters.
Psalm 115 calls us to trust not in idols but in the living God who sees, hears, speaks, and acts. It’s a call to redirect our worship and remember who really deserves the glory.
Proverbs 12 reminds us that the words we speak, the company we keep, and the diligence we apply shape the outcomes of our lives. Wisdom is never passive—it’s practiced.
Acts 20 is loaded. Paul is wrapping up his missionary journey with tears, warnings, encouragement, and fire. And right in the middle is a flickering room full of people desperate to hear what God is saying through His servant.
Don’t underestimate what happens when you just show up hungry for God.
