Get Behind Me Satan

Message Study Questions

Message Summary

Jesus is the Son of Man, emphasizing His humanity, and He is the Christ/Messiah or the Anointed One and expected Savior. He is also the Son of God, emphasizing His divinity. Jesus’ identity, His divinity and humanity and His mission, Savior, are essential for true faith. In Matthew 16, Peter was commended for declaring these truths about Jesus. At some point, everyone must decide who Jesus is. But what we think doesn’t change who He actually is. He is the King of Kings, regardless.

But for us, what we think about Jesus changes everything. If you believe Jesus is God the Son, the Savior who redeems you from your sin by taking your punishment and giving you new life with hope and a future, then you’re going to live differently; you’re going to follow Jesus and submit your plans to His. And your eternal destiny is going to be changed. In this life too, you will also find fullness and abundance with meaningful purpose as you join the work of God’s Kingdom.

  1. Who do you say Jesus is?

  2. Do you think life is like a roller-coaster ride? Why or why not?

Consider This

Death and hell cannot stand against Jesus’ church. The Church plunders hell. We overcome. When Jesus brings life, the gates of hell cannot contain it.

  1. In Matthew 16:13-16, what did Peter say about the identity of Jesus? Why is Jesus’ identity so important? (See John 8:23-24)

  2. Read Matthew 16:17-20.

    • What does God have to do with revealing Jesus’ identity to people? (See also 1 Peter 1-2 and John 6:37)

    • What does having the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven mean to you? How can you/should you apply this knowledge?

  3. Read Matthew 16:22-23.

    • How is our attitude often like Peter’s in these verses?

    • Do you trust in the sovereignty of God or your own sovereignty?

    • What is the difference between venting to God and correcting God?

    • Why did Jesus rebuke Peter so strongly?

    • How was Satan working through Peter to try to stop Jesus’ mission?

  4. Are you trusting in God’s plan or trying to get God to go along with your plan?

  5. What does Jesus mean when He says we must deny ourselves in Matthew 16:24? What does taking up our cross and following Jesus mean?

  6. How much do eternal rewards motivate you in your everyday life? How might that become more impactful to you?

  7. How does the value of the whole world compare to the value of your (or one) soul?

  8. What is your purpose? How should you spend your time?

Moving Forward – Application

Jesus invites us to not build our life in soulless pursuits but instead to deny that and follow His ways, trusting in His plans and His sovereignty.

  1. What one way could you deny yourself this week for the sake of Jesus?

  2. Where are you being a stumbling block to the work of God? How can you change that this week?

  3. How can you more closely follow God’s will for you this week?

  4. Jesus is going on the offense. He came to plunder hell. How can you help the Church to “plunder hell” this week? Is there anything you can do this week to share the gospel message with the lost in your sphere of influence?
