Parenting our kids the way God parents us.
Intro

MAIN IDEA:
Speaking life over your kids is essential to parenting God’s way.
They need to know they belong, they are loved, and they have a role.
YOURSELF:
Am I parenting God’s way?
Am I viewing the kids His way?
The things we are going to talk about today needs to be the lenses with which we parent.
There were 2 times God
audibly
spoke about His son:
1. At water baptism
–
Matt 3:16-17
–
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that
moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.
” NIV
2. At mount of transfiguration
–
*Mark 9:7 Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud:
“This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” NIV
God displays 3 qualities in these statements we can learn from
in how we treat
our children
:
1. He communicated belonging
Both statements made by God started out the same…
**THIS IS MY SON…
Our kids need to hear the same thing from us…

You are mine. You belong. A sense of belonging is the feeling of beingaccepted, valued, safe, and included in your family and community.

This feeling of belonging shapes a child’s sense of self worth.
In society, we often equate belonging to performance…
*If I perform…then I belong. Christ shows us our belonging to Him is because of what HE did not what WE did.
Eph 2:8-9
–
*8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith
—
and this is not
from yourselves, it is the gift of God
—
9 not by works, so that no one can boast
. NIV
We cannot earn this belonging by our good deeds and performance.
We simply choose to accept it or reject it.
John 1:12*

You are a part of the family of God…You belong.
Luke 15:17

Prodigal son
He came back willing to just be a servant…but the father restored him as a
son.
You may think at best you can have a servant relationship with God…
but He has never considered that.
1 John 3:1

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be
called children of God! And that is what we are! NIV
Didn’t have this as a child…
You are a child of a bigger family.
2.He communicated love
This is my son…WHOM I LOVE.
*Often and regularly…in words AND in deeds
We should strive to love the way God loves us.
Eph. 3:17-18

*17b…And I pray that you, being rooted and established
in love, 18 may
have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and
high and deep is the love of Christ
NIV
Romans reminds us…We are all sinners saved by grace…no one is righteous.
*But we must all strive to love our kids
the way God loves us.
*1 Cor. 13:4-6

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. NIV

It helps us not give up in loving others the same.
3.He communicated His thoughts
Dear friends, we are already God’s
children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. 3 And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure. 4 Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. 5 And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. 6 Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is. NLT
God’s ultimate goal here on earth is to make us like Jesus Rom. 8:29
**MAIN IDEA:
Speaking life over your kids is essential to parenting God’s way.
They need to know they belong, they are loved, and they have a role**
.
Take Away:
How would you feel if a parent sat you down when you were discouraged and said
these 3 things to you:
1. You belong.
2. You are loved.
3. You have a role.
Maybe you are here and you need to hear this for yourself.

Because of Christ, you have the right to be called a child of God when you
choose to believe and accept Him.

Not because of your performance…but because of what Jesus did.
3. He have a role.
Being a part of God’s family means living your life like Jesus.
