The Final Door: The Door of Eternity
Connection Points
June 2, 2025

“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. Matthew 25:1–4

Jesus said, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:3

Jesus said, “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap.” Luke 21:34

The bridegroom was a long time in coming, Matthew 25:5a

“Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.” 2 Peter 3:3-4

…and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. Matthew 25:5b

“At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ Matthew 25:6-9

“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” Matthew 25:10–13

And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14

This Week’s Power Verse

You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected. Matthew 24:44

CONNECTION GROUP DISCUSSION:

Opening Question:

Share a time when you were caught unprepared for an important event. How did it make you feel?

Key Takeaways:

  1. Readiness keeps the door of eternity open

  2. We are responsible for our own faith

  3. The reality is that the door will eventually close

  4. We must reach others while there’s still time

Talk it Out:

  1. What does it mean to be “spiritually ready” for Jesus’ return? How can we maintain this readiness in our daily lives?

  2. We can’t “run on fumes spiritually.” What are some ways we can make sure we’re constantly filled with God’s Spirit?

  3. How do you balance living your everyday life with the awareness that Jesus could return at any moment?

  4. Why do you think it’s important to know that we can’t borrow someone else’s faith? How does this relate to taking responsibility for our own spiritual growth?

  5. “At some point, it will be too late.” How does this urgency impact your approach to faith and reaching people for Christ?

  6. Discuss the idea of the “foolish” and “wise” young women in the parable. What are some differences between them?

  7. How can we stay “awake” spiritually in a world that often encourages spiritual drowsiness?

Live It Out:

  1. Oil Check: Take time this week to check your spiritual “oil levels.” Are you running low? Identify areas where you need to be filled up spiritually.

  2. Identify Your “Empty Lamps”: Make a list of people in your life who don’t know Jesus. Commit to praying for them daily and look for opportunities to share your faith.

  3. Readiness Routine: Develop a daily spiritual readiness routine (e.g., prayer, Bible reading, worship) to keep your “lamp” full.

  4. Invite and Reach: Invite at least one person to church or share your faith story with them this week.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, wake us up spiritually. Fill us with Your Spirit and help us to be wise, prepared, and faithful. May we burn brightly in this dark world until You return, and may we bring others with us through the door of salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
