The world

“My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” —Jesus, John 17.15-18

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the WORLD. The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” —1st John 2.15-17

World in Greek

World: Planet earth.

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” —Romans 1.20

World: Humanity.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3.16

World: Affairs, Practices

Louw-Nida Greek Lexicon: “The system of practices and standards associated with secular society.”

Cornelius Plantinga: “A culture, the pattern of beliefs, social forms, dispositions, and values that are institutionalized in a people’s collective life.

Dallas Willard: “Our cultural and social practices, that are under the control of satan and, thus, opposed to God.”

Louw-Nida Greek Lexicon: “The system of practices and standards associated with secular society.”

“In this world, gratitude to the past and obligations to the future are replaced by nearly universal pursuit of immediate gratification: culture, rather than imparting the wisdom and experience of the past so as to cultivate virtues of self-restraint and civility, becomes synonymous with hedonic titillation, visceral crudeness, and distraction, all oriented toward promoting consumption, appetite, and detachment. As a result, superficially self-maximizing, socially destructive behaviors begin to dominate society.” —Patrick Deneen

The “world” is a system of ideas, values, practices and social norms that are institutionalized in a culture organized around the twin sins of rebellion against God and the redefinition of good and evil.

This is something we just don’t talk about anymore.

“Since the Enemy’s servants have been preaching about ‘the World’ as one of the great standard temptations for two thousand years, this might seem difficult to do. But fortunately, they have said very little about it for the last few decades. In modern Christian writings, though I see much (indeed more than I like) about Mammon, I see few of the old warnings about Worldly Vanities, the Choice of Friends, and the Value of time. All that, your patient would probably classify as ‘Puritanism’ - and may I remark in passing that the value we have given to that word is one of the really solid triumphs of the last two hundred years? By it we rescue annually thousands of humans from temperance, chastity, and sobriety of life.” —C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

In what ways have I been

into the culture?

“An alarming number of Christians are very prone to viewing their faith as largely a volunteer enterprise. They pick and choose which values they wish to adopt from Scripture and which they will adopt from the dominant culture. This syncretistic approach to faith is only possible because of the unexamined assumption that we are in charge of our doctrine, dogma, and morals rather than God. Much of its appeal lies in the ability to blend in with the surrounding culture, minimize our discomfort, and still hold to the illusion of being Christian-like in one’s behavior.” —David Tackle in The Truth About Lies

I am the light of the world.” —Jesus, John 8.12

You are the light of the world.” —Jesus, Matthew 5.14

“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.” —Jesus, Matthew 5.16

“Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.” —1st Peter 2.12

“At the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.” —Paul, Romans 11.5

“I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.” —1st Kings 19.18

Will we join Jesus in the remnant?
