I Wanna Know What Love Is
Senior Pastor Jeff Maness
June 16, 2024
Father’s Day
“Love is when you kiss someone for the first time, and then you know that you’ll never be bored again, because you can always just think about kissing them.” — Justin, 11
“Eww! Love? Eww.” — Malik, 6
“The warm feeling when someone hugs you.” — Vince, 7
“You tell me! You’re old.” — Lee, 7
“Dad not farting.” — Poppy, 8
But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love. —1 John 4:8
We must beware of watering down “God is Love” into “God is loving,” or even “God, of all beings, is the most loving.” Love is not a mere attribute of God, it is His very nature. God alone loves in the fullest and highest sense of the word; for He alone loves with perfection. —Pulpit Commentary
Big Question: What does it mean that God is love?
Main Scripture: Exodus 34:5-6
This moment of revelation on Mount Sinai where we learn God’s name—it’s the moment in the Hebrew Bible. The rest of what we call the Old Testament is just story after story of this God in action. —John Mark Comer
Then the Lord came down in a cloud and stood there with him; and he called out his own name, Yahweh. 6a The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger… —Exodus 34:5-6a
I am long of nostrils.
What does it mean that God is love?
1. He is perfectly patient.
and filled with unfailing love… —Exodus 34:6b
What does it mean that God is love?
1. He is perfectly patient.
2. He is plentiful with love.
God’s love has no limit!
His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
His power no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again.
And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. 19 May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. —Ephesians 3:18-19
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. 21 Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen. —Ephesians 3:20-21
…and faithfulness. —Exodus 34:6c
What does it mean that God is love?
1. He is perfectly patient.
2. He is plentiful with love.
3. He is perpetually faithful.
When we say that God is faithful, we don’t mean you’ll never experience suffering. A lot of people—in particular, Americans—misinterpret God’s faithfulness to mean some kind of promise to give us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. So when tragedy strikes or the economy goes south or the child tests positive or we don’t find a spouse by thirty, we think God is unfaithful. —John Mark Comer
Our hope isn’t that nothing bad will ever happen to us. Or that everything that does happen to us is “the will of God.” Our hope is that no matter what happens to us, Jesus is back from the dead, and anything is possible. —John Mark Comer
None of our words or thoughts can do justice to the free, astonishing love of a holy God shown towards sinners who could not help or harm Him, whom He might justly crush in a moment, and who deserve His vengeance. Search the whole universe for love in its most glorious displays. It is to be found in the person and the cross of Christ. —Matthew Henry
