16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. —2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NIV)
HOW DO I HEAR FROM GOD?
1. What is it?
2. So what?
The Bible simplifies our options and provides clear direction.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. —Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
The Bible brings us close to Jesus and helps us to become more like Him.
39 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. —John 5:39-40 (NIV)
The Bible is TRUTH and LOVE.
Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. —Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)
Knowledge puffs up while love builds up. —1 Corinthians 8:1b (NIV)
We sometimes tend to think we know all we need to know to answer these kinds of questions—but sometimes our humble hearts can help us more than our proud minds. We never really know enough until we recognize that God alone knows it all. —1 Corinthians 8:1b-3 (MSG)
The Bible gives us power over temptation.
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” …
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” …
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
—Luke 4:4, 8, 12 (NIV)
The Bible gives us FAITH.
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. —Romans 10:17 (NASB)
The Bible renews our minds from anxiety and toxic thoughts.
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. —Romans 12:2 (NIV)
The Bible helps us when we’re in a spiritual battle.
Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. —Ephesians 6:17 (NIV)
…all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. —Psalm 139:16b (NIV)
3. What do I do?
When you submit your life to the living Word, you better understand the written Word.
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. —John 16:13 (NIV)
Apply the Word to the hard questions of life.
Be consistent—start at 5 minutes a day in the Word.
