Colossians (Part 9): Walking in Victory

Three ways this passage frees us from captivity to the world’s deceit:

Who is Christ? (Colossians 2:9)
- He is truly God.
-He is truly Man.

What has God done for us in Christ?
- Christ died and was raised for us.
- We died and were raised with him. (Deuteronomy 30:6; Colossians 1:27, 2:12)
- Christ has won the victory. (Colossians 2:10, 15)

Who are we in Christ?
- We are filled. (Colossians 2:10)
- We are forgiven. (Colossians 2:14, 2 Corinthians 5:21)

Three age-old lies that still try to capture us:
- You can be like God. (Genesis 3:1-5)
- You can get to God on your own. (Genesis 11:3-5, Philippians 2:5-11)
- You can defeat God. (Revelation 19:19, 2 Kings 6:15-17)

The victory of Christ breaks the chains of the world’s lies.

Small Group Discussion Questions

  1. Icebreaker: What stories do you have from your own life where you lost the opportunity to enjoy a victory?

  2. Which of the three age-old lies are you hearing right now in the world around you? How do you see these lies packaged today? How does Col 2:9-15 answer those claims?

  3. What other ways do you hear these lies repackaged in today’s world?

  4. What are some of the ways this passage connects with Ephesians 6:10-20? How does Christ’s headship (Col. 2:10) and triumph (Col 2:15) shape your attitude or outlook about spiritual warfare? How could you share that with someone struggling to find hope in today’s world?

  5. How does focusing on Christ’s victory shape our outlook on the world today? How does this passage help us see how to respond to other believers (or ourselves!) when hope seems lost? How does this passage help us respond to unbelievers who are overwhelmed by the state or direction of the world?
