Scripture
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV)I and the Father are one. —John 10:30 (NIV)
Quote
He was weary; yet He called the weary to Himself for rest. He was hungry; yet He was ‘the bread of life.’ He was thirsty; yet He was the water of life.’ He was in agony; yet He healed all manner of sicknesses and soothed every pain. He ‘grew, and waxed strong in spirit”; yet He was from all eternity. He was tempted; yet He, as God, could not be tempted. He was self-limited in knowledge; yet He was the wisdom of God. He said, ‘My Father is greater than I” (with reference to His humiliation, being made for a little season lower than the angels); yet He also said, ‘He that hath seen me hath seen the Father,’ ‘I and my Father are one.’ He prayed, which is always human; yet He Himself answered prayer. He said, ‘This is your hour, and the power of darkness’; yet all power is given unto Him in heaven and in earth. He slept on a pillow in the boat; yet He arose and rebuked the storm. He was baptized, which was only a human act; yet at that time God declared Him to be His Son. He walked two long days’ journey to Bethany; yet He knew the moment that Lazarus died. He wept at the tomb; yet He called the dead to arise. He confessed that He would be put to death; yet He had but a moment before received Peter’s inspired declaration that He was the Christ, the Son of the living God. He said, ‘Whom do men say that I the Son of Man am?’; yet John tells us, ‘He needed not that any should testify of man: for He knew what was in man.’ He was hungry; yet He could turn stones into bread. This He did not do; for had He done so, He would not have suffered as men suffer. He said, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’; yet it was that very God to whom He cried who was ‘in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself.’ He dies; yet He is eternal life. He freely functioned in His earth-life within that which was perfectly human, and He as freely functioned in His earth-life within that which was perfectly divine. His earth-life, therefore, testifies as much to His humanity as to His Deity, and both of these revelations are equally true. —Lewis Sperry Chafer

Study Guide
Step One: Icebreaker (Optional)
What does it mean to know someone intimately? What is required to develop that kind of knowledge?
Step Two: Open
Ask someone in your group to pray to open your time together. Ask another person to read Philippians 2:5-11.
Step Three: Discuss
- Weekend Message: What was most challenging, encouraging, confusing, or stood out most to you?
- The Character of God: In verses 6-7, Paul says that Jesus took on the nature of a servant. What does this tell us about the character of God? How does this contrast with common perceptions of people in positions of power and authority?
- Understanding Humility: In verses 5-7, Paul emphasizes Jesus’ humility. What does it mean for us to “have the same mindset as Christ Jesus?” How can we more faithfully apply the posture of humility in our own lives? In other words, how does a person develop humility?
- The Nature of Christ: How does the truth of Jesus being fully God and fully man shape our understanding of His sacrifice on the cross? In what ways does his dual nature help reconcile humanity to God?
- Service & Sacrifice: Jesus’ humility led him to serve others and to sacrifice himself for them. In what ways did Jesus serve those around him? How can we emulate this character in our lives today? What barriers do we face in doing so?
- Following Jesus: As we seek to follow Christ, how does knowing Jesus as both fully God and fully man influence our faith journey? In what ways does his dual nature raise questions for you? In what ways does his dual nature create confidence?
Step Four: Close in Prayer
Ask someone in your group to close in prayer, focusing on specific requests for people to find and follow Jesus.
