Psalm 22 is powerful in its messianic character and is fitting for us to examine how God’s ultimate goal in his salvific work is for the nations to know and worship Him. My hope is that mission and worship are not seen as strangers but as partners as part of our DNA as a church. Let’s illustrate missions and worship as functioning as the body’s circulatory system. —Pastor Chris
1. Worship fuels missions (v22-26)
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you: 23 You who fear the LORD, praise him! All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him, and stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel! 24 For he has not despised or abhorred the affliction of the afflicted, and he has not hidden his face from him, but has heard, when he cried to him. 25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation; my vows I will perform before those who fear him. 26 The afflicted shall eat and be satisfied; those who seek him shall praise the LORD! May your hearts live forever! —Psalm 22:22-26

- c. His testimony of God’s work and character is empowering (v.24-26)
Seeking the worship of the nations is fueled by the joy of our own worship. You can’t commend what you don’t cherish. You can’t proclaim what you don’t prize. —John Piper
2. Worship is the goal of missions (v27)
27 All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship before you. —Psalm 22:27
a. All the ends of the earth (Isa. 45:22; 49:6; 52:10; 66:23; Jer. 16:19)
22 “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. —Isaiah 45:22
6 he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” —Isaiah 49:6
10 The LORD has bared his holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. —Isaiah 52:10
23 From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD. —Isaiah 66:23
19 O LORD, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say: “Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit. —Jeremiah 16:19
b. All the families of the nations (Gen 12:3; Acts 3:25; Gal 3:8)
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” —Genesis 12:3
25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’ —Acts 3:25
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” —Galatians 3:8
c. The world will worship when they remember and repent.
God’s heart is that the world will
3. Mission is core to authentic worship
- a. We live on mission because we have tasted the joy of worshipping Jesus
- b. Worshipping God is not void of love for his people
