Taking it Further to Help You THRIVE…

  1. Looking back at your notes from this week’s teaching, was there anything that particularly caught your attention, challenged, or confused you?

2. What is the purpose of the law? How are sin and the law related?

3. Over the past few weeks, we have rehearsed that, in Christ, we are no longer under the power of sin but are now slaves to righteousness. But in Romans 7:14, Paul said that he is “sold under sin.” These verses are not contradictions. Explain why.

4. In Romans 7:17, Paul says that when he does what is wrong, “it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells w/in me.” (The same thing is true of us.) Does this relieve him / us of responsibility? Why / why not?

5. In what ways can you currently relate to the struggles Paul talks about in these verses? What are some specific things you are doing that you do not want to do (and not doing that you want to do) (verse 15)? (Take some intentional time to talk with the Lord about these things. Pray that He would empower you to make some changes.)

  1. In point 5, Pastor John said that we should be desperate for deliverance, which indicates a bit more than just a little desire. What does it mean (in our context) to be desperate? Why is desperation so important? What prevents us from recognizing / acknowledging our desperation?
