After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. (John 17:1)

Sermon Title: The Lord’s Prayer

1. The Promise of Eternal Life and a Place in Heaven (John 14:1-3)
“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”

2. The Promise of the Way to the Father (John 14:6)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

3. The Promise of Knowing and Seeing the Father (John 14:7-9)
“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also. And from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

4. The Promise of Greater Works (John 14:12)
“He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.”

5. The Promise of Answered Prayer (John 14:13-14)
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

“I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. (John 15:1)
“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5)

John 16:
These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. (John 16:1-2)

I. The PERSON of Prayer “After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said,” (John 17:1a)

II. The POSTURE of Prayer “Jesus looked up to heaven” (John 17:1b)

1 Kings 8:22 – “Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven.”

Luke 22:41 – “And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed.”
Ephesians 3:14 – “For this reason I bow my knees before the Father.”

1 Timothy 2:8 – “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling.”
Psalm 63:4 – “So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.”

Matthew 26:39 – “And going a little farther He fell on His face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’”
Revelation 7:11 – “And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God.”

2 Samuel 7:18 – “Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, ‘Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far?’”

John 17:1 – “When Jesus had spoken these words, He lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you.’”

Psalm 121:1-2 – “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

III. Position of Prayer “1 Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. 2 For you have given him authority over everyone. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. 3 And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth. 4 I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, bring me into the glory we shared before the world began. (John 17: 1c-5)
