Growing In Grace – Who Are You Following? (2 Peter 2:18-22)

While that mug may not be the case, sermon thoughts come from all over the place. This past week, the following phrase was used that will be used as a take off point.

Birds of a feather flock together. —Pastor Frank

This quote signals that those with the same characteristics gather together.

Who you follow is who you

.

18For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. 19While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage. —2 Peter 2:18-19

The false teachers in the immediate context of 2 Peter offered freedom when in actuality they were in bondage themselves.
If you find a path in any other person or thing than Jesus, it leads to captivity.

1So Christ has truly set us free. Now make sure that you stay free, and don’t get tied up again in slavery to the law. —Galatians 5:1

Who you follow is where you

.

20For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them. —2 Peter 2:20-21

22But it has happened to them according to the true proverb: “A dog returns to his own vomit,” and, “a sow, having washed, to her wallowing in the mire.” —2 Peter 2:22

Peter made his point by quoting Proverbs 16:11 and Proverbs 2:22.
Both dogs and pigs were considered dirty animals.

The world does not have what it takes to lead you to

At some point, it all falls apart if you don’t follow Jesus.
