Jesus is introducing a complete paradigm shift:
1. Reimagine
“You are the salt of the earth … You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:13,15
“Salt” means Christ-like
“Light” means Christ-like
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16
Following Jesus means life is
2. Reframe
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Matthew 5:17
The message is
3. Redefine
“…whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the
kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:19a
“For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

QUESTIONS For personal reflection or group discussion
1. Read Matthew 5:13-16. Think of people around you: a specific neighbor, co-worker, checkout person, kids or kid’s friends and parents… what are specific ways you can be salt and light? How can our church be a light (“shine your good deeds”) to our community?
2. If our “saltiness” is Christ-like character (mercy, humility, peacemaking, etc.), then what could cause you to “lose your saltiness”?
3. Given that the scribes and Pharisees were the most law-abiding citizens of their day, what do you think Jesus mean in v. 20?
