Psalm 55:22

22. Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: He shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. ‘

1 Peter 5:7

7. casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

The psalm describes a time of some kind of rebellion or power struggle against David, and a key leader in the struggle was a trusted associate who betrayed David. The city is dangerous because of the rebellion, and David cries out to God. Most commentators fit this psalm to Absalom’s rebellion (2 Samuel 15-18) and the trusted associate as A-hit-the-phel.

  • We must understand the role of our Father and the position he desires to hold in our life

  • Casting our burdens gives God clearance to come in

  • God can’t sustain something that He doesn’t know is failing

  • God gives us our burdens to strengthen us and to establish trust

  • David deals with burdens that have approved by God Peter deals with aniexty we have brought on and accepted as ours

  • Stop carrying unauthorized weight for the journey

This work of casting can be so difficult that we need to use two hands to do it: the hand of prayer and the hand of faith. “Prayer tells God what the care is, and asks God to help, while faith believes that God can and will do it. - Spurgeon
