Good Pride vs. Sinful Pride

“Sinful pride is an elevation of ourselves above others and a denial of our need for God.” —Pastor Craig Groeschel

A parable is a simple story used to illustrate a spiritual truth.

The Parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector

Luke 18:9-14

9  To some who were confident of their

righteousness and looked on everyone else, Jesus told this parable:  10  “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.  11  The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people—robbers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.  12  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ 13  “But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’
14  “I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt will be humbled, and those who themselves will be exalted.”

Who is this Parable directed to?
 Those confident of their own righteousness (denial of need for
God).
 Those who looked down on everyone else (elevated self above
others).

Luke 18:14

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Daniel 4:37
“And those who walk in pride he is able to humble.”

Three Types of Pride:
 “I’m Better Than You” Pride
 “I Can Handle It” Pride
 “It Doesn’t Apply To Me” Pride

Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s

, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

Matthew 26:33
Peter replied, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

Which type of pride do you struggle with the most?

James 4:6
“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the

.”

The opposite of PRIDE is HUMILITY.

1 Peter 5:5
“All of you,

yourselves with humility…”
