THE ORIGINAL THANKSGIVING MEAL

Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23-25

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

1. Thankful For Christ’s Crucifixion (1 Pet. 3:18; 2 Cor. 5:21; Isa. 53)

2. Thankful For My Salvation

  • The Lord’s Supper is about thanking God for our spiritual blessings, in particular, salvation: remission, reconciliation, justification, regeneration, adoption, redemption, intercession, sanctification, glorification, preservation, etc.

  • When I partake of the elements, I say, “Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank you, Lord, for giving to me, thy great

    so rich and free.”

3. Thankful For Our Communion (1 Cor. 10:16-17)

(1 Cor. 10:17)

4. Thankful For (1 Cor. 11:36; cf. Mt. 26:29)

  • Every time we partake of the supper, we are reminded the Jesus is coming again.

  • Christ’s return is our blessed hope. There is nothing that we can look forward to with greater anticipation.

5. Thankful For Proclamation

1) Proclaim a day of

.

2) Proclaim the gospel. (1 Cor. 11:26)

  • We declare to the world Christ’s incarnation, fulfillment of the Law, His passion, His death, His resurrection.
  • How do we show His resurrection? By the very fact we partake of the supper. When we partake, we worship a Lord who saved us from our sin.

Bottom line: Communion is the expression of our for God’s blessings of .
