THREE WORDS: Anchored by this statement/truth, “God is Good.”

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him.” —1 Peter 3:18-22

“The Goodness of God that…”

1) That Suffers for Us. (v18)

“For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,” —1 Peter 3:18

“Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.” —Hebrews 9:25-26

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” —2 Corinthians 5:21

2) That Defeats our Enemies. (v19-20a)

“in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey,” —1 Peter 3:19-20a

Different Interpretations: preached or proclaimed to “spirits in prison”?

Greek Word: Can refer to spirits, angels, or demons.

  • Jesus going to Sheol or place of the dead, declaring his victory to fallen angels and/or those who died in their sin/disobedience.
  • The spirit of Christ was preaching through Noah in the days leading up to the flood.

“by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.” —Colossians 2:14-15

3) That Delivers and Saves Us. (v20b-21)

“when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,” —1 Peter 3:20b-21

Jesus in John 3:5, “Born of water and the Spirit”.

“How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” —Hebrews 9:14

4) That Rules and Reigns over All! (v22)

“who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities (this includes the Emperor Nero), and powers having been subjected to him.” —1 Peter 3:22

Psalm 110:1, “enemies a footstool” & Romans 8:38-39, “more than conquerors”

God often does some of his GREATEST work in the midst of the WORST moments.
